Temple of the Oracle

The Temple of the Oracle crowns a rocky outcrop above Siwa's palm groves, the ruined but atmospheric temple of Amun where the oasis built its ancient fame. Its priests were said to speak the will of the god, and pilgrims once crossed brutal desert to hear their pronouncements.

Its most famous visitor was Alexander the Great, who in 331 BC trekked here to consult the oracle and, legend holds, was confirmed as the son of Amun, a moment that shaped his myth. Today you climb through the shells of mudbrick chambers to a terrace with sweeping views over the salt lakes, palms and distant dunes.

The ruins themselves are modest, but the sense of place, remote, storied and beautifully sited, is what lingers. Time your visit for late afternoon light.
