معبد كوم أمبو

The Temple of Kom Ombo stands dramatically on a bend of the Nile between Aswan and Edfu, unique in Egypt for its perfect symmetry: a double temple with twin entrances, twin sanctuaries and two mirrored halves, one dedicated to Sobek the crocodile god, the other to Horus the falcon. Everything is doubled, a rare architectural conceit that makes the plan instantly readable.

Built in the Ptolemaic era, its columns still carry traces of colour, and carvings of surgical instruments hint at an ancient healing cult here. Do not miss the small adjoining museum of mummified crocodiles, sacred to Sobek and drawn from the river below. As a favourite sunset stop on every Nile cruise, it glows beautifully in the late light with the water at its feet.
