The SS Thistlegorm is one of the planet's most celebrated wreck dives, a British armed merchant ship sunk by German bombers in 1941 off Ras Mohammed. Frozen in that moment, her cavernous holds still hold the wartime cargo bound for Allied forces: ranks of trucks and motorcycles, rifles, aircraft parts, and even a railway locomotive blown clear onto the seabed.

Diving her is like swimming through a submerged museum, exploring corridors of military hardware now cloaked in coral and patrolled by barracuda, trevally and glassfish. The scale, history and marine life together make it a bucket-list site for experienced divers.

Most visit on day boats or liveaboards from Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurghada, sea conditions permitting.
