Built for King Djoser around 2670 BC, the Step Pyramid is the earliest large-scale cut-stone monument in the world and the centrepiece of the vast Saqqara necropolis.
Designed by the architect Imhotep, it began the tradition that would lead to the great pyramids of Giza.
