المسرح الروماني

Tucked into the Kom el-Dikka excavations in central Alexandria, this is the only Roman amphitheatre ever found in Egypt, a graceful semicircle of thirteen marble terraces that once seated audiences for music and performance. Rediscovered by chance in the twentieth century while clearing ground for housing, it opened a window onto the city's deep Greco-Roman past.

The wider site rewards a wander: mosaic-floored Roman villas, the remains of bathhouses and lecture halls, and the famous Villa of the Birds mosaics under cover nearby. It is a compact, walkable slice of the classical Alexandria of Cleopatra's era, and an easy pairing with the catacombs and Pompey's Pillar. A reminder that this Mediterranean city belonged as much to Rome as to the pharaohs.
