Qasr el-Sagha Temple

Qasr el-Sagha is one of the Fayoum's genuine mysteries, a small, severe temple built of massive limestone blocks fitted together without mortar, standing alone on the barren desert north of Lake Qarun. It bears no inscriptions and was never finished, leaving even its date and the god it honoured open to guesswork, most likely reaching back to the Middle Kingdom.

Getting there is part of the appeal: a 4x4 track across empty desert, past fossil beds and the petrified remains of an ancient sea, to a monument that feels utterly forgotten. The reward is solitude and strangeness, a perfectly built little temple with nobody around and vast views over the lake basin. For desert-lovers and the endlessly curious, it is one of the region's most atmospheric secrets.
