Pyramid of Userkaf

At Saqqara, just north of Djoser's famous Step Pyramid, sits the crumbling pyramid of Userkaf, first king of the Fifth Dynasty around 2490 BC. Once cased in fine limestone, its core was later quarried away, leaving what early explorers dismissed as a mere 'heap of stone', a rounded mound that gives little hint of its royal origins.

What makes it worth the detour is its place in the story: Userkaf pioneered the sun-temple cult that would define his dynasty, and a colossal red-granite head of the king found here now ranks among the Egyptian Museum's treasures. Standing amid the rubble with Djoser's step pyramid on the horizon, you feel the vast, quiet sweep of Saqqara's necropolis away from the Giza crowds.
