The Nubian Museum is Aswan's quiet triumph, an award-winning space that tells the story of Nubia, the ancient Nile land straddling southern Egypt and Sudan, from prehistory through the pharaohs to the wrenching modern chapter when the High Dam's rising waters drowned villages and temples alike. Its collection was in large part rescued from that flood.
Inside, beautifully lit galleries trace Nubian art, daily life and the great UNESCO campaign that lifted Abu Simbel and Philae to safety. Outside, landscaped grounds hold a traditional Nubian house and a rock-cut display. It is the ideal context-setter before or after Abu Simbel and Philae, and one of the most thoughtfully curated museums in the country. Give it a proper hour.
