Marsa Alam

Marsa Alam is the Red Sea's quiet southern frontier, a long stretch of desert coast where the reefs are still pristine and the crowds of Hurghada feel a world away. This is a place to slow down: soft-sand bays, warm turquoise shallows and a horizon broken only by the odd dive boat heading out at dawn.

The real magic is offshore. Snorkel or dive over house reefs teeming with anemonefish and parrotfish, or join a trip to swim with resident dugongs, spinner dolphins and sea turtles that graze the seagrass meadows. Between the water, the desert presses close, with Bedouin camps and star-filled nights just inland.
