The Luxor Museum is a masterclass in restraint, a compact, superbly lit collection that chooses quality over quantity and rewards you for it. Where Cairo's museums overwhelm, this one lets a handful of exceptional New Kingdom sculptures breathe, each piece given space and drama against dark walls.

Highlights include a serene statue of Amenhotep III, a wall of talatat blocks reconstructing Akhenaten's sun temple, and two royal mummies displayed with dignity. Treasures from Tutankhamun's tomb and a cache of statues found buried in Luxor Temple round out a collection drawn almost entirely from Thebes itself. Air-conditioned and rarely crowded, it makes a perfect cool-hour break between temple visits, and is at its most atmospheric in the evening.
