Lake Qarun

Lake Qarun is a vast, ancient inland lake at the heart of the Fayoum, one of the oldest lakes on earth and once far grander, a remnant of a prehistoric sea. Its calm, silvery water and big desert skies make it the tranquil centrepiece of an easy escape from Cairo.

The lake is a magnet for birdlife, especially in winter when migratory flamingos, herons and waders gather along the shallows, drawing birdwatchers and photographers. Along the shore, simple lakeside cafes serve just-caught grilled fish, and small boats putter out for a slow cruise on the water.

Pair it with the pottery village of Tunis, the desert waterfalls and the fossil valleys nearby, and Lake Qarun anchors a restorative day or two of lakes, birds and quiet desert horizons.
