كرانيس (كوم أوشيم)

Scattered across a low desert rise at the northern edge of the Fayoum, Karanis is one of Egypt's great Greco-Roman farming towns, founded under the Ptolemies to settle veteran soldiers and feed a growing empire. Where papyrus once recorded tax rolls and grain shipments, you now walk between the mudbrick shells of houses, granaries and two limestone temples, the desert slowly reclaiming the streets.

It is a quieter, more human counterpoint to the pharaonic icons: no soaring pylons, just the everyday texture of Roman-era Egypt. A small on-site museum, housed in a former rest-house, holds glass, terracotta, coins and everyday objects pulled from the sand. Come for the sense of a whole community frozen mid-life, and the long, empty views across the oasis fields.
