Islamic Cairo & Khan el-Khalili
30.0477, 31.2622
Islamic Cairo is a thousand years of history packed into a warren of lantern-lit lanes, soaring minarets and medieval mosques — the living heart of the old city.
Wander from the great Al-Azhar mosque into Khan el-Khalili, Cairo's famous bazaar, where coppersmiths, spice sellers and jewellers crowd alleys that have traded since the 14th century. Climb toward the Citadel of Salah al-Din for the alabaster Muhammad Ali Mosque and sweeping views to the pyramids, and pause for mint tea at the storied El Fishawy coffeehouse.
It is best explored slowly on foot, with a guide to unlock the history behind the doorways — chaotic, atmospheric and utterly Cairo.
Know before you go
Dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, and carry a scarf, since you will pass through active mosques where shoes come off at the door.
