THE FAYOUMLandmark
Fayoum City
29.4000, 30.4600
Fayoum City is the oasis capital and the natural gateway to the region's lakes, waterfalls and desert. Its centre is a bustling tangle of markets and canals, most famously the ancient waterwheels — the creaking wooden sakias that have lifted irrigation water here since antiquity and still turn beside the town's waterways.
It's a working provincial city rather than a polished sight, and that's its charm: fruit stalls, coffeehouses, the everyday rhythm of oasis life. Most travellers pass through to reach Wadi el-Rayan, Tunis Village's potters or Lake Qarun, but a wander around the waterwheels and souk gives a genuine feel for the Fayoum before heading into the desert.
Know before you go
Fayoum is best explored as a hired-driver day or overnight from Cairo, since sights are spread far apart and public transport between them is sparse.
