El Dahar is Hurghada's original quarter, the old town that existed long before the resort strip, and it is where the Red Sea city keeps its everyday Egyptian soul. Away from the marina's polish, you wander a genuine souk of spice sacks, fabrics, lanterns and household goods, past the domes of the old mosque and a Coptic church, among locals shopping rather than tourists browsing.
It is the place to feel Hurghada as a working town: cheaper prices, saltier atmosphere, and the sharpen your bargaining edge. Duck into a backstreet ahwa for tea and shisha, hunt for spices and souvenirs at a fraction of resort rates, and watch the rhythm of local life unfold. A short, rewarding change of pace from the beach.
Know before you go
This is a traditional neighbourhood, so dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, and expect to haggle firmly but good-naturedly in the souk.
