Diomede's Island

Diomede's Island is a small, palm-fringed islet on Lake Qarun, scattered with ancient ruins and reached by a short felucca or motorboat hop from the Fayoum shore. Once part of the lake's Greco-Roman world, it now sits quiet and low against the water, a scatter of old stones among the reeds and birdlife.

The draw is the crossing as much as the island: gliding over the still, saline lake with desert light all around, then stepping onto a little-visited patch of history. It's a peaceful, offbeat detour for those already exploring Lake Qarun and the Fayoum dunes, best combined with a lakeside fish lunch afterwards.
