Rising over Sharm El Sheikh's Old Market in Sharm El Maya, the Al Sahaba Mosque is the resort town's most beautiful piece of architecture and a surprise for anyone who assumes Sharm is all reefs and beach clubs. Completed in 2017, it blends Ottoman domes and slender minarets with Fatimid and Mamluk detailing, its façade layered in honey-coloured stone that glows at sunset.

Step inside and the scale opens up: vast chandeliers, intricately patterned ceilings and calm, echoing prayer halls. Named for the companions of the Prophet, it anchors the bustling bazaar below, where you can wander the lantern-lit lanes for spices, souvenirs and shisha cafés afterwards. It is a reminder that even Egypt's beach capital carries a thread of the country's deep Islamic heritage.
