Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi Mosque

The Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi Mosque is Alexandria's most beautiful and most beloved place of worship, its cream stone walls, soaring minaret and clustered domes dominating the Anfushi waterfront near the old fishing harbour. Built over the tomb of a revered 13th-century Andalusian Sufi saint, the present grand structure dates from the 20th century in an ornate Islamic revival style.
Inside, high ceilings, arabesque plasterwork and coloured light create a serene, luminous space that anchors the surrounding square of mosques. It's a focal point of local devotion and one of the city's defining silhouettes.
The waterfront setting makes it a natural stop on a walk around the Anfushi and Qaitbay end of the corniche.
Know before you go
As an active mosque and shrine, dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, remove your shoes to enter, and avoid the busy Friday midday prayer time.
